Analysis of UFO sightings in 2011 underway

by on Feb.04, 2012, under Breaking News

Well, we're in the process of compiling and crunching the stats for Canadian UFO reports in 2011. Initially, as I had posted some months ago, it didn't look like we were going to have a high year for UFO reports, since we had barely received 500 cases by mid-October or so.

However, as has been the case in several previous years, case reports were delayed in being received and recorded by the various sources from which we obtain case data. So, the result was that although by the end of December we hadn't come close to a record number of cases in a year, by the time we tracked down all the available data, the number is much higher.

In fact, while I don't think we have reached a new record number of UFO reports in a single year, we'll be right up there... likely among the highest number of cases in a single year since the annual studies were begun in 1989. This isn't in any way a validation of the claims that "sightings are way up" that have been tweeted about and heralded to news media by some UFO groups. But if the numbers are up there, it does show that sightings have maintained a high level for several years in a row.

How many of those will be labelled "unknown" this year? How many will be "high quality unknowns" (cases without simple explanations that have been investigated and analyzed in some detail)?

We'll just have to wait and see,

In 2008, the last year for which we had reliable data, there was a record high of 1004 UFO reports in Canada in a single year. We are going back through 2009 and 2010 data so that we can get a good idea of how the past four years compare with one another.

UFOs ring in the New Year across Canada

by on Jan.05, 2012, under Breaking News

As noted in a previous post, I had received a few UFO reports for 2012 early on New Year's Day, suggesting things were getting off to a quick start. Most people who responded to me were of the opinion that fireworks were the likely cause. Unfortunately, the reports don't bear that out. In fact, most witnesses said they had seen the UFOs after the New Year's fireworks displays were over and that the unknown objects were quite different. That's not to say the reports were of alien spaceships. Just that fireworks were likely not the causes.

One thing to note, however, is that the large number of sightings that occurred on January 1 is very unusual. I've looked back in the files, and no other year had more than a handful of reports on January 1.

Here's the list of reports, geographically across Canada by province westward, in the order they may have occurred throughout each time zone as New Year's Day progressed.

12:10 am     St. John's, NF
After the fireworks were over, the witness saw several bright red and yellow lights following one another across the sky in a ragged grouping.

12:25 am    Montreal, PQ
A bright orange/yellow ball of fire headed S across the sky.

12:00 midnight   Barrie, ON
After fireworks, two witnesses saw 3 red lights followed by 2 or 3 more. No strobing or flashing lights were seen.

12:01 am    London, ON
Two people watched a steady red/orange light move swiftly towards the NNE.

12:05 am    Barrie, ON
A triangular formation of 3 orange lights were seen in the sky; they disappeared one by one.

12:05 am    Barrie, ON
After fireworks, as many as 40 people may have seen 6 orange/yellow lights passing over the city from the S.

12:15 am    Guelph, ON
A steady red light moved slowly under thick clouds for 3 minutes before it disappeared.

12:23 am    Cambridge, ON
Glowing ball or orange light moved across sky. As it disappeared near the horizon, 2 or 3 more identical objects flew in the same manner.

12:23 am     Cambridge, ON
A second independent report of an orange ball over the city.

12:25 am    Skootamatta lake, ON
A bright orange light climbed rapidly into the NW sky, then hovered and seemed to be "dangling on a string." It seemed to move closer, then shot away quickly out of sight.

After midnight     ?, ON
A stationary, V-shaped object was seen motionless in the sky. Within a minute, it vanished.

12:05 am    Grande Prairie, AB
3 orange lights in a triangular formation were led by a 4th light towards 3 witnesses, then vanished.

12:25 am    Camrose, AB
2 bright orange objects passed overhead quickly, moving NW-SE. Then another single light passed in the same direction.

12:30 am    Camrose, AB
An orange/red light flew E-W overhead during about 4 minutes.

12:04 am   Surrey, BC
About 30 people outside for a fireworks display watched several orange lights "zoom" across the sky E-W in the S, about five seconds apart.

12:10 am    Duncan, BC
4 orange lights moved slowly W, in 2 pairs.

And finally, an outlier:

9:00 pm    Peribonka, PQ
A witness driving west along Lac Saint-Jean saw "2 white lights moving around with many red steady lights" for a total of about 30 minutes.

Sixteen sightings all in one night from coast to coast is rather unusual. (We've had localized flaps that saw many more, this geographical distribution is remarkable.)

Sources: PSICAN, Brian Vike, MUFON, UFOROM

Certainly, some of the cases were likely sightings of Chinese lanterns, especially the ones in Barrie and Cambridge. Setting some of these aloft at New Years was reportedly common this season. The faster-moving ones may have been bolides. Indeed, on New Year's Eve, a bright fireball was widely seen across the southern USA. And some of the slower-moving lights may have been satellites.

Still, it's odd to have so many cases on January 1 in this manner.

Top 12 List: 2012 Sky Watching Events

by on Jan.02, 2012, under Breaking News

*

Quadrantid meteors and 11 other big skywatching events of 2012

CSMonitor.com
-   What lies ahead sky-wise for 2012? What celestial events might we look forward to seeing?

Joe Rao, SPACE.com Skywatching Columnist, selected what he considers to be the top 12 "skylights" for this coming year, and list them in chronological order. Not all these events will be visible from any one locality … for the eclipses, for instance, you'll probably have to do some traveling … but many can be observed from the comfort of your backyard.

And you won't have to wait long for the action to begin. On Jan. 4, the Quadrantid meteor shower will peak with an estimated 100 meteors per hour, according to NASA.

Hopefully your local weather will cooperate on most, if not all, of these dates. Clear skies!
- Joe Rao

1. Quadrantid meteor shower (January 4, 2012)
This meteor shower reaches its peak in the predawn hours of Jan. 4 for eastern North America. The Quadrantid meteor shower is a very short-lived meteor display, whose peak rates only last several hours. The phase of the moon is a bright waxing gibbous, normally prohibitive for viewing any meteor shower, but the moon will set by 3 a.m., leaving the sky dark for a few hours until the first light of dawn; that's when you'll have the best shot at seeing many of these bluish-hued meteors.

From the eastern half of North America, a single observer might count on seeing as many as 50-to-100 "Quads" in a single hour. From the western half of the continent the display will be on the wane by the time the moon sets, with hourly rates probably diminishing to around 25 to 50 meteors.

2. Feb. 20 to March 12: Best evening apparition of Mercury
In February and March, the "elusive" innermost planet Mercury moves far enough from the glare of the sun to be readily visible soon after sunset. Its appearance will be augmented by two other bright planets (Venus and Jupiter), which also will be visible in the western sky during this same time frame.

Mercury will arrive at its greatest elongation from the sun March 5. It will be quite bright (-1.3-to-0 magnitude) before this date and will fade rapidly to +1.6 magnitude thereafter. Astronomers measure the brightness of objects in terms of magnitude, with lower numbers corresponding to brighter objects.

3. March 3: Mars arrives at opposition
On March 3, the Earth will be passing Mars as the two planets wheel around the sun in their respective orbits. Because Mars reaches aphelion — its farthest point from the sun — on Feb. 15, this particular opposition will be an unfavorable one. In fact, two days after opposition, Mars will be closest to Earth at a distance of 62.6 million miles.

Compare this with the August 2003 opposition when Mars was only 34.6 million miles away.  Nonetheless, even at this unfavorable opposition the fiery-hued Mars will be an imposing naked-eye sight, shining at magnitude -1.2, just a bit dimmer than Sirius, the brightest star, and will be visible in the sky all night long.

4. March 13: Brilliant "double planet"
The two brightest planets, Venus and Jupiter, team up to make for an eye-catching sight in the western sky soon after sunset. They will be separated by 3 degrees on this evening, Venus passing to the northwest (upper right) of Jupiter and shining nearly eight times brighter than "Big Jupe." Although they will gradually go their separate ways after this date, on March 25 and 26, a crescent moon will pass by, adding additional beauty to this celestial scene.

5. May 5: Biggest full moon of 2012
The moon turns full at 11:35 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time and just 25 minutes later it will arrive at its closest point to the Earth in 2012, at a distance of 221,801 miles. Expect a large range in ocean tides (exceptionally low to exceptionally high) for the next few days

6. May 20: Annular eclipse of the sun
The path of annularity for this eclipse starts over eastern China and sweeps northeast across southern and central Japan. The path continues northeast then east, passing just south of Alaska's Aleutian Island chain. The path then turns to the southeast, making landfall in the western United States along the California-Oregon coast. It will pass over central Nevada, southern Utah, northern Arizona, the extreme southwest corner of Colorado and most of New Mexico before coming to an end over northern Texas.

Since the disk of the moon will appear smaller than the disk of the sun, it will create a "penny on nickel" effect, with a fiery ring of sunlight shining around the moon's dark silhouette. Locations that will witness this eerie sight include Eureka and Reading, Calif.; Carson City, Reno and Ely, Nev.; Bryce Canyon in Utah; Arizona's Grand Canyon; Albuquerque and Santa Fe in New Mexico and just prior to sunset for Lubbock, Tex.

A partial eclipse of the sun will be visible over a large swath of the United States and Canada, including Alaska and Hawaii, but no eclipse will be visible near and along the Atlantic Seaboard.

7. June 4: Partial eclipse of the moon
This partial lunar eclipse favors the Pacific Ocean; Hawaii sees it high in the sky during the middle of its night. Across North America the eclipse takes place between midnight and dawn. The farther east one goes, the closer the time of moonset coincides with the moment that the moon enters the Earth's dark umbral shadow.

In fact, over the Northeastern United States and eastern Canada, the only evidence of this eclipse will be a slight shading on the moon's left edge (the faint penumbral shadow) before moonset. Over the Canadian Maritimes, the moon will set before the eclipse begins. At maximum, more than one-third of the moon's lower portion (37.6-percent) will be immersed in the umbra.

8. June 5: Rare transit of Venus across the sun
The passage of Venus in front of the sun is among the rarest of astronomical events, rarer even than the return of Halley's Comet every 76 years. Only six transits of Venus are known to have been observed by humans before: in 1639, 1761, 1769, 1874, 1882 and, most recently, in 2004.

The next one will occur in the year 2117. When Venus is in transit across the solar disk, the planet appears as a distinct, albeit tiny, round black spot with a diameter just 1/32nd of the sun. This size is large enough to readily perceive with the naked eye.  HOWEVER ... prospective observers are warned to take special precautions (as with a solar eclipse) when attempting to view the silhouette of Venus against the blindingly brilliant solar disc.

The beginning of the transit will be visible from all of North America, Greenland, extreme northern and western portions of South America, Hawaii, northern and eastern portions of Asia including Japan, New Guinea, northern and eastern portions of Australia, and New Zealand. The end will be visible over Alaska, all of Asia and Indonesia, Australia, Eastern Europe, the eastern third of Africa, and the island nation of Madagascar.

9. Aug. 12: Perseid meteor shower
Considered to be among the best of the annual displays thanks to its high rates of up to 90 per hour for a single observer, as well as its reliability. Beloved by summer campers and often discovered by city dwellers who might be spending time in the country under dark starry skies.

Last summer a bright moon wrecked the shower by blotting out many of the fainter streaks, but in 2012 the moon will be three days past last quarter phase on this peak morning – a fat waning crescent presenting only a minor nuisance for prospective observers.

10. Nov. 13: Total eclipse of the sun
The first total solar eclipse since July 2010. Virtually the entire path of totality falls over water. At the very beginning, the track cuts through Australia's Northern Territory just to the east of Darwin, then across the Gulf of Carpentaria, then through northern Queensland, passing over Cairns and Port Douglas before heading out to sea.

The rest of the eclipse path, including the point of the maximum duration of totality (4 minutes, 2 seconds) is, unfortunately, pretty much wasted by falling over the open waters of the Pacific Ocean.

11. Dec. 13-14: Geminid meteor shower
If there is one meteor display guaranteed to put on a very entertaining show it is the Geminid meteor shower. Now considered by most meteor experts to be at the top of the list, surpassing in brilliance and reliability even the August Perseids.

Bundle warmly against the winter chill; you can start observing as soon as darkness falls on the evening of Dec. 13 as Gemini starts coming up above the eastern horizon and continue through the rest of the night. Around 2 a.m. when Gemini is almost directly overhead, you might see as many as two meteor sightings per minute … 120 per hour! And the moon is new, meaning that it will not be a factor at all.

12. Dec. 25: Christmas evening and Jupiter
On Christmas, many will be looking skyward and wondering what that brilliant silvery "star" is hovering just above the waxing gibbous moon. It's not a star (or Santa returning to the North Pole), but the largest planet in our solar system, Jupiter, serving as a sort of holiday ornament with our nearest neighbor in space to cap off a year of interesting and predictable sky events that we all can enjoy!

UFOs reported in Canada in 2012 already?

by on Jan.01, 2012, under Breaking News

Yes, it's true. Off to a flying start.

The first case of 2012 was reported to PSICAN from St. John's Newfoundland. It occurred on January 1, 2012 at 12:10 am, following a fireworks display. A single light, like on a plane, was moving high in the sky by itself. Then the witness noticed several others following it, creating a kind of trapezoidal formation. They suddenly stopped, then moved behind clouds and vanished from sight.

The second case occurred only a few minutes later, in Guelph, Ontario. Two witnesses were preparing to go to bed at 12:15 am and through a window noticed a steady red light moving slowly, high in the sky. It went behind some clouds after three minutes. (MUFON)

MUFON Case # 33838

Date:    2009-07-10
Time:   00:00
City:    Kingston
Region:    Ontario
Country: Canada
Shape:    Other,Unknown
Duration: 00:08:10
Distance: 500 feet or less
Summary: I witnessed an Organic looking floating and hovering object. It moved right changing colour and shape. I was able to capture photos of movement as well as shape changing and colour changing.

Report:
I was at a cottage in the 1000 islands region near Kingston, Ontario and experienced seeing something very abnormal in the sky. I was sitting on a dock over looking a lake when the object appeared from across the lake and moved towards the dock. The object can only be described as an organic looking connected formation of lights that hovered about 100 feet above the lake. The object moved towards my location initially then moved to the right slowly, while at the same time it changed shape and colour. I remember seeing red, purple, green ,orange and blue. The object's reflection could clearly be seen in the dark lake. At one point the object even seemed to form a face and arms. It was not a craft or ship of any time was certainly not man made. But it was clearly glowing and and a defined image. It kept moving right before it dropped below the tree line and disappeared. There were two other witnesses with me, and one of my friends was able to capture several photos (7-12).

I have attached one of the photos that I have, and if you think that this is something interesting I can get the other photos by contacting my friend.

It was nothing like I have seen or heard of before. It was not a fire work because it hovered for several minutes before vanishing. I was a little bit frightened when viewing the objects but my friends were laughing and kept saying, "It's not going to hurt us." They didn't seem to be afraid at all.

Any information of this sighting would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

1974 Close Encounter III In British Columbia, Canada

by on Nov.19, 2011, under Breaking News

A couple in British Columbia saw a cigar-shaped UFO shining a light on a mountain face.  During this event their automobile died, then restarted as the object ascended away from them.

Here is that report, edited for clarity.  To see original report, please click on the case number.

MUFON Case # 33466
Date:    1974-08-15
Time:   03:40
Status:    Submitted
Region:    British Columbia
Country: Canada
Shape:    Oval
Distance: One mile or less
Summary: UFO descended , hovered, shone abeam of light on mountain face, 3 times . shut off light and ascended faster than a blink. My car then started up without turning key.

Report:
Driving early morning from Vancouver, BC to Calgary, Alberta, through Yoho National Park, my wife told me to pull off the road so the bright lights could pass us.  She saw it first when I pulled over.  However, my car died, no lights, no radio. We were motionless for about 5 min., as it hovered and shone a single light on the face of one mountain. Then to a second face, then a third.  Then it spread the beam of light over all three faces at once.  After focusing for awhile, it turned off the beam and ascended and gone in split second.

The sky was cloudless full moon.   The UFO had the shape of a cigar about the size of 2 football fields and hovered approx. 500 feet from the ground, one half mile(approx.) away from us, at a 60 degree angle on passenger side of me.

My wife at the time were scared stiff, for we had our infant daughter sleeping in the back seat.

As it descended it affected my auto by shutting it down.  I didn't even turn the car off.  When it ascended and out of sight, the car started up without me turning the key.

Once in Calgary, phoned the observatory to report.  They got both our statements and said if they hear anymore from that area, they would be in touch.  No calls.

MUFON Case # 33381
Date:    2011-11-15
Time:   20:06
City:    Fairbank
State:    Iowa
Shape:    Triangle
Distance: 500 feet or less
Summary: UFO flies over car

Report:
I was driving home from a banquet that i had for school and i was just singing along to my music and noticed a really bright light about half a mile in front of me then it went away. So i slowed to a stop on the side of the road and watched a triangle shaped aircraft with very bright pulsating lights on the three ends of the aircraft fly near my car. The lights would stay on for about 2 seconds then go off and in the middle a very bright light would flash and go off almost immediately and this sequence continued. I turned off my radio and shut my car off to listen and watch. This aircraft was completely silent and seemed to blend in with the sky. The only way i noticed it was the star displacement in the sky and the bright lights emitted from the aircraft. The craft was flying VERY fast towards the direction of my car but slowed when it almost reached my car. It was maybe 20 feet above the treetops and it hovered for a few seconds about 200 feet to the northwest of my car above the tree line then resumed its flight. It made a slight alteration in course to go more towards the north but did not turn completely. I drove home and looked into the sky to see if it followed or i could still see it. I looked to the east and could see its middle light shining but from this point it was considerably smaller and looked like a helicopter search light. I was very flustered and confused so i came home and researched all the possible explanations before i came to the conclusion that it was a UFO. In the morning i looked around the area but there was no evidence that it had been there the night before.

MUFON Case # 33370
Date:    2011-10-17
Time:   19:12
City:    Edmonton
Region:    Alberta
Country: Canada
Shape:    Triangle
Distance: Unknown
Summary: V- or Triangle-Shaped UFO Slowly Moving Over West Edmonton

Report:
I was stopped behind a bus while heading east on Stony Plain Road, close to 149 St intersection in Edmonton. The bus was loading/unloading several passengers, so I had time to look around. Looked to my left out the driver's side window and saw an unusual formation of lights in the sky. The formation was flying very slowly towards me - I soon could see 5 distinct lights in a V-formation. The lights were very large, round-shaped, and warm white in color. The lights were large and contiguous with each other. No halo or bleeding of one light to the next - very distinct round shaped. The object was flying very low and not changing altitude. It was traveling south (so it was flying perpendicular to, and towards me). I turned off my iPod and opened my window and stuck my head out to determine if there was any sound (and hopefully to signal to other people to look up). I could hear no sound over that of traffic. As the object got closer - I estimate within 500 feet (< 150 m) total distance from me (horizontal and vertical) - I could observe that the lights were attached to a single silver-gray translucent craft with a body down the center. The craft itself may have been triangular rather than a V. The object was almost overhead when I noticed the bus was gone. No one had honked, so hopefully the drivers behind me were as transfixed by the object as I was.

I slowly started driving - looking for a place to pull-off so I could get out and take a better look. My husband called on the cell phone at that moment - I thought he had seen it too. I did not answer the phone (due to distracted driving) but the time of the missed call was 7:13:13, therefore I can be very precise about the time of sighting. By the time I pulled onto a side street to return his call, I could no longer see the object due to distance and trees obstructing my view. I watched the craft for 45-sec to 1-min. Sunset was at 6:33 pm on Oct. 17, 2011 in Edmonton. The skies were clear and calm. The iPod I had with me was 1st-generation Shuffle, and my cell-phone is dumb. Neither have cameras. I was therefore unable to take a picture/video.

If others saw this object I hope that they report their sighting. I also hope that someone got photos or video - there would have been plenty of time to do so if one had the technology with them. (In the report above I said the object appeared aspirin sized. Each light was aspirin sized, so the object was 3X aspirin sized in length down each side.) Note: I wrote this report the evening of the sighting. I submitted it to a local UFO group, but did not hear back from them. Although I have no evidence, I wanted to have this sighting documented.
