Close Encounters of the First Kind: Do we really care? Part Two.

by on Feb.14, 2012, under Breaking News

Let's see how far I can get on this topic today. When you're dealing with an old man sometimes the energy just quits --- but high hopes. Yesterday we looked at some of the 1940s and 1950s cases which happened to be in my files [I say that to remind us that there are MANY other cases and many other drawings], where the witness blessed us with an actual first hand illustration of the object involved. Today we can gaze at another set of these things; this time from the late 1950s to the mid-1960s. And so we go....

Our first and unsurprising "conclusion" is that they continue to defy any detailed pattern, just as their earlier sister set of cases also did so deny [how's that for 19th century British sentence structure? --- sorry, my PhD is in 19th century History of Science and Technology]. If anything these characters may even be a little bit more diverse. Even the two "diamond hexagonal" objects differed mightily in size, although they were both on the small side when it comes to UFOs. It was nice that the one lady felt that she saw the same shaped craft ten years and several hundred miles apart, but even that might give one some cause for out-of-control speculation [feel free; it doesn't hurt that much if you're honest about it].

As to the specific sightings: There are some of UFOlogy's strongest CE1s in this set. I've found over the years, even in very informal polls at UFO get-togethers, that folks differ greatly in their "favorite case lists", but a couple of these above make them more than not [ Red Bluff and Exeter]. [I've read recently an attempt to debunk Exeter, but if you read the extensive interviews by John Fuller and others on this case, you see rather quickly that the persons pushing the debunk aren't interested in addressing the whole case's details]. And Red Bluff is a UFO Titan no matter how you want to cut it. In that case the Air Force and Donald Menzel actually used atmospheric diffraction of stars WHICH WERE NOT EVEN IN THE SKY YET to come up with what was a totally ridiculous concept anyway. THAT was one of the biggest, most over-the-top, explanatory stupidities or dishonesties [take your pick] in the history of the field.

A case that I particularly like [probably for irrational reasons] is the Millersport, OH incident of 1963. [my "synthesis" of the four witnesses' drawings is above]. In this case a family watched a UFO essentially "parked in the air" for some time until it took off. The drawings were done separately and "are the same, and different at the same time". They have plenty of similarity to convince one of the unity of the experience, and enough difference to convince one that the witnesses were not even subconsciously pushed to say one exact story. So, for me, even though this was one family, the reports have an element of credible independence. This case may also be a good old-fashioned CE3 as well, as the mother felt that she quite clearly saw a humanoid -shaped figure silhouetted in one of the windows. So, what can I tell you? I like it, and probably would put the case in my top 200 or so encounters to use to defend the phenomenon. And just to complete that thought: it is my experience with just my own files that there are probably at least 400 or 500 cases good enough to roll out there in front of reasonable people to defend the basic anomalous nature of the phenomenon.

There are other cases in the list of similar confidence... but I've placed alongside to the left a drawing of one just too late to have made that panel: Mackay, Queensland 1965 [actually it may well have made it if I was being obsessive about month-&-day order but life's too short for such nonsense in filing.]

Mackay has multiple independent witnesses, a very good viewing allowing much detail, and a possible related trace [which would convert it into a CE2t]. For the ET-technology debate, the witnesses stated that this was "a well-defined machine, solid and metallic". The witnesses had no background with which to judge size, and said it could have been anywhere from 30' to less than 10'. The internal diameter of a ring trace found the next day a little ways away was c.20', so the guessed range may have been good. Three brilliant floodlights surveyed the ground, and the thing was in sight for 30 minutes. It then rapidly accelerated away. Well, I say that's a rocking good UFO! And it's one of the many that Jim McDonald researched while he visited Australia in 1967. I'm happy to share anything with Jim McDonald, but particularly a mutual interest in the Mackay case.

Other things are sequestered on this list. Sheffield, OH 1958 was probably the incident which caused the Air Force more difficulty in Congress than any other. It was a pretty good unknown, but the difficulties were caused by the USAF making a complete hash out of its non-investigation and making statements which offended a no-nonsense woman. With Mrs. Fitzgerald's cooperation, a Ohio UFO group [not NICAP but of NICAP attitude and competency] pursued congressional aid in redressing USAF incompetency and nearly got an investigation by congress when Don Keyhoe couldn't. The ultimate case report small monograph [ called the "Fitzgerald Report"] was delivered to many congressmen, and is a UFO historical classic.

Elsewise here, are things like the great Lt.Colonel Gasslein case from Springfield,PA with all its witnesses and its long-observation, and apparent clear high technology nature. Another thing which is irrelevant to everybody but my brother and myself is the St. Albans, WV case of 1958, which is our own personal CE1. I used to view this as "just as nice domed disk", but as I thought about our observation the thing had to be closer than I thought.

I should have drawn a little "map" but this should be simple enough to follow without that. Tom and I watched the disk going by E-to-W almost exactly, looking out of a north-facing window in our home. When it looked like I was going to lose the sighting shortly, I "sacrificed" a little of the window view and turned and bolted for the west-facing door in another room. Trees unfortunately blocked the whole scene so I had to continue running until I cleared them [ah, those were the days .... actual running]. Once cleared the thing still wasn't in sight so I shifted on a precise right angle turn to the north [not by plan; that was how you had to go given all the obstacles] and jumped down a steep embankment [could I ever do that? Yes you could old man; you were once a basketball player remember? Basketball? What's that?]. Once down that embankment it was just a few more strides to get a look to the west and there the thing was, almost due west at the time. So you can see that I took a "Z" shaped run with right angles, and the object was at least close to dead west on that final angle. I'm not saying that the disk was only 30 yards away when it passed by the window; that seems way too close, but who knows? But even given some slop in the actual angle-guessing of my last position, that object was very probably far closer than a football field. So, I'm giving myself credit for a CE1. If you don't... that's OK too. It's also a good case because someone up-river was reporting it to a local radio station at the time. I have no idea how many other folks may have seen it, or whether Tom and I got the best look.

The picture above is the artwork from the old J.Allen Hynek slideshow, illustrating the concept of a close encounter of the first kind using the Exeter case. It is a pretty faithful rendition from witness testimony vs some of the other representations that you see [example, see the picture at the very top of this post; also supposed to represent Exeter]. It points out another danger in these drawings: never put anything out there without the approval of the witness. It as an old prof friend of mine would say "subtracts from the sum total of knowledge in the Universe".

My lightbulb is growing dimmer than usual at the moment, so I'm going to stop here, and complete this topic next time with the Total BS part: what might it mean? Till then, if you have the stamina.

Close Encounters of the First Kind: Do we really care?

by on Feb.14, 2012, under Breaking News

A little look at some CE1s--- but first: "Excuses, Excuses." The blog's been mainly dormant for several weeks for some "good" and some not-so-good reasons. My mother's care continues to occupy a lot of time, and a lot of energy. Currently I'm getting a "month-off", thus finally this posting. Secondly, the big UFOs and the Government book is in the final polishing, has been in the majority seen by the publisher, and is being read by the author who will write the foreword. In other words, such stress is about to float downstream. SITU is actually at the point where I can build the final interior shelving units in the garage, and begin shelving books and journals according to category. There is some psychological relief in that, and such relief aids in the day-to-day "optimism" which is necessary to do research and contribute to blogs. So, life is still not that of an irresponsible playboy, but just enough relaxation of issues is occurring to make a few occasional blog entries more likely.

So, to the material-of-the-day: this comes from my freedom to attempt straightening out my files which had gotten out-of-hand due to problems one and two above. I had probably 200-300 cases to log and file; that's how far behind things had become. Once I finished, I thought: is there something here relatively mindless that can be done which would be amusing? For reasons unknown, I pulled out the files from the CE1 drawer and began to idly page into them. The interest arose as I saw that, although in the minority, there were quite a few files wherein the witness had sketched a craft [or someone else did, but had gotten witness approval]. So, I began plucking them out, and here they are. [I've more than this first page --- waiting with the rest until later is good strategy, I think].

Here are twenty-one case drawings from the WW2 to 1957 era. It's interesting, I think, for anyone to just look at the array for a minute without me gabbling away making noise about them.

And here are the thumbnail case details for the sketches above. Hopefully you will be able to pop this graph up and magnify it if necessary; there are a lot of pixels in it.

I'm not sure what to begin to say. I'll be bonehead obvious to start. UFOs don't look alike. They especially don't look alike if they are anything but smooth featureless globes or disks, or cigars or ovals. As soon as you get features, then the simple description of a "UFO" goes out the window.

For those of you who have been around the subject for a long time, you know that this is one of the great and frustrating enigmas about the phenomenon. Why don't the darn things look more like they came off a high-tech assembly line? People will try to say that they all look like they are in a general class of shapes ["radial symmetry" would be the fancy talk], but even that isn't really true. They rarely look alike; they rarely are the same size or color; they rarely behave alike; --- even giving them the benefit of somehow "seeming" alike [some good percentage of them anyway], they are far from Model T Fords a la Henry's mass production concepts.

There are UFOlogists who dislike this very much. I used to be that way. Now I've done a "180". The fact that everyday Janes and Joes do NOT describe some fixed image "flying saucer" gives me a significant boost towards the credibility of the reports. Arrays like that pictured above show [to me] conclusively that the media does not control UFO report content, and probably controls nothing about UFOs at all.

Let's leave the general comments with that for now, and say something about a few of the specific cases.

The drawing way at the top was one of Edward Ruppelt's favorite cases, and it has become one of mine as well --- whether it happened or not. This was the "shooting" incident which he was told about on one of his trips to Holloman AFB. An officer there told him that a pilot had fired his weapons at a UFO [VERY controversial thing to do] and even showed Ruppelt the incident report WHICH THE OFFICER PROMPTLY BURNED!!! Ruppelt was thoroughly boggled by this, BUT HE BELIEVED IT. We know that he believed it because he presented this incident prominently before the CIA investigation panel [The Robertson Panel]. Could we have actually had a USAF/UFO shooting incident in late 1951?

The next drawing down is my colored up version of the little sketch in the witness drawing panels. It's the 1952 Bainbridge, MD case where two women naval officers saw a large black disk hovering over the roadway which they were walking and spectacularly "pouring" sparks like a liquid fall down onto that road. This two-witness case has the necessary high credibility AND high-strangeness to make it one of my favorite "hidden" encounters.

The incident pictured just above [again my colored-up version of the witness sketch] is the Yuma, AZ case of 1952, and is another little-known report. The case has a very detail-oriented observer, picturing a rather unique craft, and with an intelligent credible report [there were allegedly two military observers to this but, as usual, the second wasn't around for an interview]. My favorite detail was that the object produced a distinctly different color-pattern when it decided to take off, from that which it displayed while hovering.

The case at the bottom is a 1954 case from the Pacific Ocean, off Yaron-Jima Island. In this incident, the crew of the ship saw a very bright neon-blue object approach, looking only like a line of blue in the distance, but a disk when close. When directly overhead it appeared to have a thick red-colored ring surrounding a black center on its underside. The thing was quite large, perhaps one hundred feet in diameter.

I'm going to leave off at this point. I'll try to get another set up tomorrow or soon, with some further commentary. Until then, Happy Valentine's Day.

Hit & Run: Back with a few brief … whatevers.

by on Jan.09, 2012, under Breaking News

Hello, folks. Green Light on the blog for a day, anyway. It has been tough to think into things enough to feel worthy of placing anything out here in front of you, but I'll give this a try. Caveat emptor as to whether any of this makes sense. If not, hopefully it will at least be amusing.

The first bit of this is from DATA-NET. I dried up on this newsletter circa the early 1970s, not because the SITU collection ran out of them, but because for about two years there weren't many good cases to report --- and so the blog drifted into other things. Since D-N is easy to page through during "distracted" times, I recently ploughed on and found a few items in early 1973. I'll give you the ho-hum ones first and then the one which I think has more to it.

1]. York, ND. August 27, 1972. Multiple witnesses saw a light moving back and forth like a pendulum in the sky. It was bright red, changed to whitish-green, and vanished. An hour later it, or something like it, appeared again as a bright red light, staying red until it disappeared.

So far, essentially nothing here. A few days later, the lady of the farm was out swathing the fields of durum, and came across a bald spot in the middle of the crop. The bald spot was circular [12' in diameter] and the farming family knew perfectly well that it had not been there before. The bald spot was particularly odd for any area which had been continuously cultivated in the past, as it showed no sign of scorching nor digging and earth-moving; it was simply bald, and looked as if nothing had ever grown there. [Actually I lied earlier, folks, I don't consider this one a Ho-Hum case at all]. On the top of the bald spot, merely scattered about [i.e. not embedded nor in any way impacted in the soil] were a bunch of odd rocks. These things were like furnace slag, clinkers, actually airily light like volcanic scoria. They were certainly not "local". None of these things were even slightly "buried" and so obviously "landed"/scattered there recently, though without any force. There's where our mystery remains, friends. One should only add, that this seems to be another in a couple dozen or so cases that I have seen, where mystery "slag" or scoria-like rocks remain behind. No one has a clue about this. One desperate attempt at guesswork somewhere in the UFO literature wondered whether the advanced technology of the propulsion systems drew energy from chemical bonds in crystalline matter, or whatever, and that any minerals might do, and when "done", the detritus was discarded as slag. Don't ask me for the source of that "explanation"; I've forgotten it. If you want to claim that you thought of it, you'll probably get away with it, as most of us UFOlogists are so old by now, the guy who said it is probably "on the other side".

On to a couple of other less spectacular things but which are probably good bits of the database:

2]. Novi, MI. August 3, 1972. Multiple witnesses immediately reported their sighting to local police. The first witness heard a "peculiar" noise like humming or a drone in the air, which directed her attention. It was an oval-shaped object with white lights ringing it. Others were called out to see. Shortly later three bright lights appeared in the sky, and one of them suddenly shot off rapidly to the horizon. Then another object appeared, very much like the light-ringed disk. This one flew directly over the house. [at some height, however, so this can't be classed as a CE1]. Then, while the original witness was phoning the police, the others saw a huge white light travel across the entire sky, west-to-east. Then it stopped suddenly, made a right-angle turn, and flew off to the north. The police shortly arrived, interviewed the witnesses, and found them credible people, and their stories coherent within themselves and between one another. That's a pretty good Lights-and Objects case to add to our files.

3]. Georgetown, CA. August 6, 1972. Seven witnesses reported multiple lighted objects. They were apparently luminous and either discoid or rectangular in shape --- the witnesses insisted in using the word "oblong", and UFOlogists have known that to be used by witnesses in both ways. Sometimes the objects arrayed themselves horizontally and sometimes vertically. Beams of light, like searchlights, shown down from them. The beam colors were green, white, or yellow. [sorry you modernists, no blue beams]. Sometimes the searchlights were so bright as to light up the entire meadow. Occasionally, the objects seemed surrounded by a mist. The objects came over slowly, hovered, and then shot off rapidly to the East. Sometimes a small humming sound was heard. Behaving according to the Law of the Times, these things showed up at about 1:30am and 4am. Lots of witnesses; just enough strangeness.

4]. West Palm Beach, Fl. September 14, 1972. Perhaps dozens of people saw sky acrobatics from as many as eleven objects and lights. Objects pulsated red, yellow, white, green, and blue. So far one might say: unusual atmospheric conditions causing spectacular color diffractions for stars near the horizon [I have seen such an event in Kalamazoo all around the low horizon]. BUT... Objects were said to rapidly move about, flipping and whirling. They seemed to be actual objects not entirely illuminated but rather flashing their colored lights through, possibly, portholes. "When they accelerated they first turned like a ring and then the whitish color would turn yellowish and then all the lights would go on". When they rose, a red tail appeared at one end of a disk shape. Local Air Traffic Control said they had no radar contact but did see them. They said that they thought they were stars.

Later, another report came in of a cigar-shaped illuminated object. [there's a lot of confusion in this business about the connection, even datewise, between these two things]. The USAF made a statement on this that they thought that it was Venus. Or maybe a "weather phenomenon". This time local radars did track the object. A fighter pilot went up and said he thought what he saw was Venus. NORAD itself apparently was willing to approve the scramble. An Eastern Airlines pilot, however, said that he'd never seen anything like it. Nevertheless, the local USAF spokesman said it WAS Venus. The determining factor he said was that those radars that thought they saw the thing were only "height-finding radars" and not "search radars". If the latter it would have been a different story, he said. Later he was informed that Palm Beach International airport had ONLY "search radars". Whoops. Further research found that Miami International also had the thing on its own "search radar". The last military comment was: "This does put a new light on the situation." And silence again fell.

Re-reading those cases, they're better than I originally felt. Pretty good actually.

The last case for that DATA-NET was an older one: El Infiernillo Observatory, Chilean Andes. May 17, 1967. This is a photographic case and a blow-up of one of the three photos is above. The larger light is the one of interest, and the smaller one is from a second observatory, El Roble. You can tell from this that the bigger light is below the mountain chain peaks [as El Roble is significantly higher].

The three photos of May 17 were sort of a culmination of a series of odd lights [termed by observatory personnel FPE, Fenomeno por explicar, and logged as such; FPE means "phenomenon requiring an explanation"]. A few such events had been appearing since October of 1967. All of these things seemed about the relative size and brightness of "stars" of magnitude zero to one --- i.e. they would be the brightest stars in the sky, had they been in the sky. They did move but mostly hovered in one spot. The astronomers added that they appeared to have "luminous rings of Fresnel diffraction".

The observatory is a professional facility connected to the University of Chile, and information about the incidents came directly from a university spokesperson. These observations, whether an unknown natural phenomenon or something else remain mysteries.

So, leaving that there, let's go on to something that I really know nothing about.

Some of you will have heard that recently particle physicists have created conditions wherein an event took place but was not seeable by any of the instruments. This event was microcosmic but apparently true, as the predecessors and the resultants of the event could be detected, even though the event itself was not. Many persons are profoundly puzzled by this, but, foolishly, I am not [particularly].

Why? Because I've bought into the extra dimensions of the physical force world long ago, and the fact that "things" can vanish in one location and reappear in another without going through the intervening three-space. Electrons shifting orbits do this every time. So, how??

It has to do, of course, with these "superstring" dimensions or arenas of force relations or whatever they will turn out to be. Whatever their nature, they form a complex web of interactions "beneath" our ordinary spacetime reality, and those deep interactions "project" their effects onto our threespace. Really? How?

Well, the question asks too much, but a crude diagram by me might give us just a small chance of relating to what's going on. Frontier thinking in particle science has abandoned "commonsense" ways of seeing reality and now considers the three dimensions of our observable space essentially "empty", until "force" is projected upon it. Space sits there as an empty "canvas" waiting for the superstring dimensional force relations "below" to project upon and manifest forces and mass [in this view just another form of force manifestation]. Material particles are just specific projections to a spatial coordinate where they manifest as a point location of force. The only reason that we think these "points" have size is that they have force associated with them, which produces a distance-of-integrity within which it is difficult to encroach without tremendous energies. "Size" therefore is an illusion.

Size is doubly an illusion when uncounted numbers of the force-point projections associate together to form macroscopic objects. The entire "object" is composed of points of no "material extent" bound together by the character of the force projections involved with these zero-extension particles. We are not only mainly empty space as we were taught when we learned about the distance that our electrons orbit from their atomic nuclei, but in a sense we have no absolute material extension at all. A bizarre universe which takes some meditation to come to grips with. But what does this have to do with those guys who made something happen that you couldn't see?

Let's try my diagram again. The previous comments and the diagram are saying that the real primary causal "happenings" in reality are taking place "down there" in the Dimensions Beneath the World. If meddlesome scientists can get the trick right, the Dimensions Beneath the World will still do their work of force-interactions and subsequent production of a new happening "down there", but not necessarily project that happening onto our familiar spacetime. In other words "It happened, but we couldn't see it".

Could these guys have found a way, no matter how minute to begin with, to block whatever the transmission or projection mechanism is from the Underworld to the Spacetime "surface"? They must be doing something like this or how else did they facilitate an event [which must take place "down there"] and yet not allow it to manifest "up here"? Somehow the "path" to the dimensions of Space was blocked.

That's interesting enough to me, but I find that when one finds that one can manipulate a natural mechanism one way, it usually means that one can also manipulate it the other. In this recent experiment, we "blocked" a physical event from tunneling up its ... "portal?" ... into Spacetime. Might we not then be able to facilitate some physical array to "vanish" in place "down" such a portal? And, since the integrity of the true "thing" exists still in the microworld dimensions beneath, might one not be able to manipulate where its integrity would be re-projected to? That is: vanish here... re-appear there. Is the Portal Technology hinted at by the recent "curiosity" physics experiment? If so, projections coming from there to here might manifest through such tunnels or portals, manifesting force through small areas of regular space. Maybe....

At El Infiernillo, the astronomers said that the light manifestations exhibited Fresnel diffraction. Fresnel diffraction.... an effect caused by a light source projecting through a narrow gap or tunnel opening. .... Fresnel diffraction .... narrow tunnel projecting ... nah, can't mean anything ... can it??

Yours for the fun of the Mystery Chase. Don't know when the next will be, folks, but I'll be thinking of you. Peace.

NASA’s Start of 2012 – Grail Twins Orbit the Moon

Twin NASA Moon Probes Start New Year by Entering Lunar Orbit

Space.com- A pair of NASA spacecraft are ringing in the new year in grand style, with both now successfully circling the moon after journeying through space for more than three months.

The Grail-B probe entered lunar orbit today (Jan. 1) after firing its main engine at 5:05 p.m. EST (2205 GMT) in a 40-minute-long orbital-insertion burn, NASA officials said. It joins its twin spacecraft, Grail-A, which arrived at the moon yesterday evening (Dec. 31) after completing a similar maneuver.

The two probes are on a mission to study Earth's nearest neighbor from crust to core. After gradually circling down to super-low orbits, the pair will zip around the moon in tandem, working together to map the lunar gravity field in unprecedented detail, researchers said.

Scientists expect the probes' measurements to help unlock some longstanding mysteries about the moon's composition and evolution— mysteries that have withstood more than 100 moon missions over the years.
"You might think that, given all of these observations, we would know what there is to know about the moon," Grail principal investigator Maria Zuber, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, told reporters Wednesday (Dec. 28). "Of course that's not the case."

The moon's many secrets

Scientists think the moon formed after a Mars-size body struck Earth about 4.5 billion years ago. This titanic impact blasted huge amounts of material into space, and they eventually coalesced.
While this basic outline of the moon's origin is pretty well established, many mysteries remain about how the rocky body has evolved since then.

Chief among these puzzles, perhaps, is why the near side of the moon — the face we always see from Earth — is so different from the far side. For example, plains of volcanic rock (called maria) are much more widespread on the near side, and the far side is higher and more mountainous, with the lunar surface 1.2 miles (1.9 kilometers) higher in elevation, on average, than the near side.

"We don't actually know why the near side and far side of the moon are different," Zuber said. "We think that the answer is locked in the interior."

One possible explanation, proposed by researchers this August, is that the gigantic collision 4.5 billion years ago actually created two moons. The second moon, which was much smaller, later slammed into our moon's far side, the idea goes, spreading itself over the surface rather than creating a crater.

The Grail probes' observations could help determine whether that scenario is accurate, researchers said.
"We believe that we can obtain the information that we need to test this hypothesis," Zuber said.

Formation flying

The $496 million Grail (short for "Gravity Recovery And Interior Laboratory") mission launched Sept. 10. The two washing-machine-size probes then spent more than three months making their slow, circuitous way to the moon.

By comparison, NASA's manned Apollo 11 mission in 1969 reached the moon in three days. But Apollo 11 prioritized speed, while Grail's path is energy-efficient and has given engineers ample time to assess the probes' health and charge up their scientific gear, researchers said.

Grail-A and Grail-B still have some work to do from their initial lunar orbits to get into position. They'll spend two months circling lower and lower, eventually settling into orbits just 34 miles (55 kilometers) above the lunar surface by March.

Only then will the twin spacecraft begin their science campaign. They'll chase each other around the moon for 82 days, staying 75 to 225 miles (121 to 362 km) apart. [Video: Grail's Mission to Map Moon Gravity]
Regional differences in the lunar gravity field will cause the two spacecraft to speed up or slow down slightly, changing the distance between them as they fly. Bouncing microwave signals back and forth off  each other, Grail-A and Grail-B will gauge these tiny distance variations constantly.

The Grail team will use the twin probes' measurements to construct highly detailed maps of the moon's gravitational field. These maps are expected to reveal a great deal about lunar composition, allowing scientists to draw insights about how the moon formed and how it has changed over time, researchers said.
Public outreach and education are a big part of the Grail mission. Each spacecraft is carrying four cameras and will snap photos of the lunar surface at the direction of middle-school students across the country. Students will get to pore over these pictures after they're beamed back down to Earth.

The photo project — which is called MoonKam and is run by former NASA astronaut Sally Ride — has already generated lots of enthusiasm. More than 2,100 schools have signed up to participate, according to Zuber.

"We've had a great response to the MoonKam project," Zuber said. "We're still accepting applications. We can accommodate another several hundred schools into the program if there's interest in doing that."

Photo and video capture furious activity in Milky Way nebula 2,000 light-years away

*

(Space.com)  Just in time for the holidays, the Hubble Space Telescope has snapped a spectacular view of a star-forming region in our Milky Way galaxy that looks like a snow angel in deep space.

This region, called Sharples 2-106 (or S106 for short) is located nearly 2,000 light-years away in the direction of the constellation of Cygnus (The Swan). The nebula is found in a relatively isolated part of the Milky Way, researchers said.

The S106 nebula measures several light-years across, and contains vast clouds of gas that resemble outstretched wings amidst an hourglass shape. The light from the glowing gas is colored blue in this image. A video and photo of the "snow angel" based on Hubble's observations reveal a spectacular view of the cosmic sight.

Hubble's view captures furious activity in the nebula, with ridges and ripples of super-hot gas mixing with the cooler interstellar medium. A massive young star, called Infrared Source 4 or IRS 4, is responsible for this turbulence, scientists said.

Radiation from IRS 4 makes the lobes of gas glow bright blue in the image, as they stretch outward from the central star. Luminous red veins also appear throughout the nebula creating intricate patterns.

A ring of dust and gas around the star squeezes the expanding nebula into its apparent hourglass shape. Faint light from the central star reflects off tiny dust particles, making the surrounding environment glow, and revealing darker filaments of dust beneath the blue dust clouds, the researchers said.

Astronomers have studied S106 and found several hundred brown dwarfs, which are cool, failed stars. When the nebula is viewed in infrared wavelengths, more than 600 of these misfit stars appear, scientists said.

Brown dwarfs weigh less than a tenth of our sun, and because of this low mass, they are unable to trigger enough energy through nuclear fusion. These cosmic objects encompass the S106 nebula in a small cluster, the researchers said.

S106 was the 106th object to be cataloged by astronomer Stewart Sharpless in the 1950s, the researchers said.

The newly released image was taken by Hubble in February. The composite picture was created by stitching together two images taken in infrared light.

Missouri Has More Than ‘Trick or Treaters’ on Halloween, 2011

by on Nov.02, 2011, under Breaking News

Video Capture- MUFON CASE # 33047

*
More than Trick or Treaters were out and about on Halloween night in Missouri.
UFO witnesses report to MUFON.

[Note: These reports are "as is" with no corrections. -SW]

MUFON CASE # 33047
Date:    2011-10-31
Time:   20:10
Status:    Assigned
City:    Lee's Summit
State:    Missouri
Shape:    Circle,Disc,Sphere
Distance: Unknown
Summary: One extremely large, circular, disc-like main ship, bright, pulsating lights of all colors and white, + small, red, orb-like shape ejected toward the end, which stayed behind, hovered for many minutes, then shot off after the large craft!

Report:
I was in the car with my daughter-in-law and two small grandsons, while Trick-or-Treating last night (10-31-11). We were stopped at a light on a busy street when I noticed a huge, circular object moving right toward us from the North. It had pulsating and blinking multi-colored lights, as well as extremely bright, white lights. It came very close and hovered over all the cars and buildings, through several light changes (everyone who saw it just sat where they were!), then slowly began to move off toward the SW in an arcing path. When we first saw it, it was as if it was approaching us with its bottom facing us, (as if on a vertical orientation, and as it retreated, it turned flat (or horizontal), at times moving very slowly, then accelerating very quickly. It would completely disappear from time to time. We followed it, both of us taking turns video-ing it with our phones. It at times acted as if it were playing a game with us, hiding, then appearing very close so we could see details, including a dome-like appendage on the bottom-center. Then it would speed off, eventually making a complete circle over our area and winding up hovering over the neighborhood where we had originally been headed. It disappeared again, as we got out of the car to go tell our friends, and many people in the neighborhood came running up asking if we saw it, too! It returned from low on the Northern horizon, hovered directly over us, at times turning on its end, as before, and at other times performing all sorts of movements that seemed to defy regular laws of physics! Someone said the news was saying it was a group of 7 precision-flight small plane operators, performing a fly-by over the football stadium, but we saw this very closely and it was not a group of small planes (or large ones)! It was completely circular and everything moved as one, without fail. It made very little noise, a pleasant, low, oscillating hum, that I have never heard before, nor had anyone else. Definitely not the sound of any plane or helicopter I have ever heard. This sky-line ballet went on for over an hour and toward the end, the craft had turned to a horizontal position and forcefully ejected a much smaller, red, orb-like object, then shot off never to be seen by us again. The red orb hovered for many minutes, its light just pulsating and varying in intensity of frequency, then it began moving, slowly at first, then it also shot off in the same direction as the large craft and we never saw it again, either. It had no sound. We all felt very affected on many levels. We were, of course, very excited, skeptical (kept trying to google any news about it but phones were not working well), happy (no one seemed to feel frightened or upset), and tingly. Personally, I felt like I had lost a huge chunk of time, and felt an enormous amount of high-frequency energy around me and running through me! I felt hopeful, and could not sleep the rest of the night. The small children were also elated, and had lots of energy as well. Today, I could find no news on TV or the net, other than MUFON, about this! I am just so sad that my phone camera could not capture the beauty and enormity of this thing!

MUFON CASE # 33050
Date:    2011-10-31
Location: Blue Springs, Missouri
Summary: Two venus like objects diaganol of each other in the southeast sky one fades then the other.

Report:
I was going to report this last night, but didn't. I have never seen or reported anything weird like this. I searched again today and saw three others reported the exact same thing. Two reports in California and one close to me in Kansas. My story is pretty much the same as the other three. I didn't notice any temp change like the one person said though. I was sitting in my driveway passing out treats and waiting for my family to get back from trick or treating. At 7:30pm central time,I glanced up in the southeast sky at about 45-55 degrees up from the horizon and noticed what I thought were two bright planets diaganol of each other. They were totally stationary. I noticed in the other reports they were vertical of each other and in another part of the sky. I don't know if that has to do with where they are in the U.S. compared to where these things were in the sky. Anyway, I watched them about 60 seconds. I don't know how long they were there before I noticed them. Then one faded and about 4 seconds later, the other. Weird. I don't think it was any alien action, but I would like to know what it was. I thoght maybe military flares, but they were not falling. Then when it was seen in California, I knew that wasn't the case.

MUFON CASE # 33028
Date:    2011-10-31
Location:  Lee's Summit, Missouri
Summary: 10/31/11 Lee's Summit, Mo Disc UFO

Report:
My wife and I were driving to take our child trick-or-treating. My car was heading west on Hwy 50 and had just passed the Hwy 7 exit. On the north side of Hwy 50 to the North West I saw a long line of lights moving accross the sky to the north. I pointed at them and told my wife to look because it was such a very long line of lights. They quickly changed direction and moved South East bound right at us. The line of lights moved up as the bottom of the disc shaped ufo was exposed. The bottom was covered in a very large amount of spot lights. As the disc came closer and decended it tilted so far up that the bottom part of the disc with all the spot lights was completely visable. One of the spot lights on the bottom caught my eye as the rest of them shown down. The bottom was curved just like a saucer. It was so gigantic and low to the ground I decided to slow down to 50 mph and took the first U-turn available. Cars all around me were slowing down. I passed Hwy 7 again and turned North. I watched the ufo decend and then hover to the North West. The night sky lit up with a flash of light in a perfect circle around the ufo. I kept my eyes in the sky but didn't see it again. I did notice shortly after the ufo sighting an unusual amount of normal aircraft activity was everyhere. Two planes flying at the same low altitude came from the East flying West bound. They flew right over the location the ufo seemed to land but kept going.

MUFON CASE # 33023
Date:    2011-10-31
Location: Belton, Missouri
Summary: Lights in sky

Report:
I was sitting on my driveway in a chair, handing out candy for halloween, very clam out no clouds beautiful evening moon was at a crecent, just enjoying the peacefulness, then i look up at the sky facing south i saw in the sky 2 bright objects, at first i thought they were jets in formation with there lights on, as i kept watching they werent moving they were hovering, then the one a little lower, lights got dimmer and dimmer, i was in awe never have ever seen anything like this, then the other one did the same thing just slowly dimed its light's out. best way to discribe it would be the Phoinex light's all over again with this being in Belton Missouri and only 2 of them and for a shorter time by best guess is they were there for a min or 2 i watched them for at least one min.

MUFON CASE # 33022
Date:    2011-10-31
Location: Missouri
Summary: Tubular Ufo Just above tree line.

Report:
I was taking pictures of the skyline and noticed this object in the sky. As it came over head it looked semi transparent. It had no noticable wings and was tubular in shape. These type of craft come through this area quite often. However this one was rather large. It was about 30 to 40 feet in length with a dark band in the center and on one end. I didn't know what to make of it. Just thought folks would be interested in seeing this and maybe someone else has seen this before.

MUFON CASE # 33016
Date:    2011-10-31
Location: Lee's Summit, Missouri
Summary: Very scary to look at, Many bright flashing lights and it was a fast moving object.

Report:
Ok, I was having a boring halloween tonight. I have just gotten back from my school basketball tryouts, and i was planning on going trick or treating with my girlfriend tonight, but i didn't. I instead stayed home, watched southpark, and the chiefs game. Before the chiefs game, i went outside to check on my dogs for about 20 minutes. About 5 minutes after i had gone outside, I saw something moving rapidly across the sky. The Object stopped from time to time, Maybe every 5 minutes, But it moved fast and rapidly. Now, My home is in Peculiar, Missouri. This object was in the direction of Lee's Summit, Missouri. I think it was in Lee's summit, but it MAY have been in Raymore.
Nothing really made me notice it at first, I just looked up at the sky, and boom. There it was. This object had very bright lights that seemed to go on randomly, and it moved very rabidly. As i said, it hovered from time to time. I have heard from some of my friends that they saw something move in the sky too. One of my friends from Lee's Summit said that they went outside on their front porch, and they saw something move rapidly across the sky. Another one of my friends was in a car with a group of people. They were about to go to a Halloween party, and they all said they saw something. I looked up Lee's Summit UFO sightings, and i have found out that UFO sightings in that area are very common. I lost sight of the object, when it seemed to look as if it was descending. It MAY of landed, but i am not for sure. I had a weird reaction, I was scared, and i ran inside. However, i went into the sunroom, and continued to look out the window at the object. After the sighting, i talked to my mom. She said that it was probably just an Airplane or a blimp for the monday night football game. I said that airplanes do not hover, and that blimps probably do not move and change direction as fast as the object i saw.

Editor's Note:  I wonder if perhaps the occupants of the UFOs are curious about all the little goblins, ghost, Spider Men, Thors and Captain Americas?  Could be. -SW

Aliens, 7 Billion Humans, and Our Depleted Planet

by on Nov.01, 2011, under Breaking News

As I gazed at the “Photo of the Week” of the strange, brilliantly lighted craft over Hoboken, New Jersey, I wondered what so many of us wonder, “What is their power source? What energy or energies are they using?” Meanwhile, back on the planet, Homo sapiens have hit the 7 billion mark, and counting.

Hollywood to revisit ‘The Twilight Zone’ in 2012

by on Oct.16, 2011, under Breaking News

By Robbie Graham Silver Screen Saucers

Cloverfield director Matt Reeves has been selected by Warner Bros. Pictures to direct a new movie based on the classic TV series, The Twilight Zone, which originally ran on CBS from 1959 to 1964 and later underwent two revivals (1985–1989 and 2002–2003).

According to Deadline, a script has been penned by Jason Rothenberg, and life-long Twilight Zone fan Leonardo DiCaprio is onboard as a producer. This won’t be the first time The Twilight Zone has received the silver screen treatment: in 1983 Twilight Zone: The Movie (directed in part by Steven Spielberg) flopped at the box-office due to bad publicity stemming from a helicopter crash during filming that killed three of the movie’s actors. Even without the blight of this tragedy, the episodic structure of the movie -- as well as the jarring styles and sensibilities of its multiple directors -- made it decidedly hit-and-miss.

The new Twilight Zone is being described as a "big science fiction action movie with a single freestanding story." No further details have yet been released by Warner Bros., however, online speculation suggests that the movie may be based on the classic TZ episode ‘To Serve Man’, in which a race of seemingly benevolent nine-foot-tall aliens lands on Earth and proceeds to solve humanity’s most pressing problems, including hunger, energy, and the threat of nuclear war. Soon, many Earthlings are volunteering to visit their alien saviours’ home planet where --oops-- they learn that they are ingredients in an alien cookbook titled... To Serve Man!

Warner Bros. aims to start shooting in summer 2012, which means the movie won’t hit cinemas until sometime in 2013. Whether or not the new Twilight Zone movie will actually be based on 'To Serve Man' remains to be seen, but an alien-themed story of some kind seems likely given the current popularity of the UFO movie at the Hollywood box-office.

Incidentally -- and perhaps more intriguingly -- Deadline also notes that director Matt Reeves has “a deal at Universal to write and direct a film based on the Ray Nelson short story 8 O’Clock in the Morning, about a man who awakens with the realization that aliens are all over the place and control society.” 8 O’Clock in the Morning, of course, was the story on which John Carpenter’s brilliant 1988 movie They Live was based. Universal has just released a prequel to Carpenter’s 1982 classic The Thing to poor reviews and disappointing box-office returns. Silly Universal -- leave the Carpenter classics alone!

A San Antonio resident made the news, when he claimed that on Wednesday, September 14, 2011, he spotted an Unidentified Flying Object and captured it on video.

“I was pointing that way and I saw that object traveling that way, going east,” said Vallejo. “First of all no navigational lights that’s what got my attention at first. Then I started zooming in and I started seeing the different configuration of the lights.”

As of today, his Youtube video has had over 45, 000 views.

Sep-14-2011 a Huge UFO craft was filmed over San Antonio,Tx..As I was facing west I notice this Huge glowing object traveling east.I could clearly see this object was no aircraft .No FAA navigational light's were visible. So i quickly crabbed my camcorder for a closer observation..As i began filming this huge unknown object multiply lights could be seen..This UFO appears to be a solid craft. On the video you can see this object to be emiting some kind of glowing energy. While i was filming unknown, the lights configuration began to change. When zooming in multiply lights were diff were shape... I did not see any FAA lights/hear any noise coming from this unknown object....In my opinion Clearly an UNIDENTIFED FLYING OBJECT..This was an awesome sighting due to as it appears to be One solid object..And the size of this object seemed to be enormous..This huge glowing object was clearly no aircraft or satellite.

Note:  UFO stands for 'Unidentified Flying Object' and clearly, this thing in the video is "unidentified".  Now whether it is of this Earth or not, you decide. -SW
