2012 Maya / ET documentary backed by major Hollywood players… and Vatican?

by on Jan.25, 2012, under Breaking News

 UPDATED: 26 Jan. 2012

Oh dear. It looks like "producer" Raul Julia-Levy's dreams of "shaking the world" with his much-hyped documentary may never be realised. Because Raul Julia-Levy may not be Raul Julia-Levy at all, but rather a con man by the name of Salvador Alba Fuentes. For details, see:

Los Angeles-based producer Raul Julia-Levy has told The Hollywood Reporter that his upcoming 3D documentary, Revelations of the Mayans 2012 and Beyond, will reveal “the most important archaeological finding in the history of mankind” and prove beyond doubt that the Maya had contact with extraterrestrials.

Announced in August last year, the much-hyped documentary is a collaboration between archaeologists, scientists and the governments of Mexico and Guatemala and allegedly draws on previously classified government documentation dealing with the Maya and 2012.

Unsurprisingly, the documentary has become the subject of fervent speculation and debate in the UFO and New Age communities. But many commentators are viewing with suspicion the fine print of Julia-Levy’s description of the project, suggesting that the documentary may turn out to be little more than a savvy marketing campaign for the tourism ministries of the Mexican and Guatemalan governments.

In October 2011, Antonio Huneeus, writing for OpenMinds.TV opined:

“It seems to me that this story has much more to do with PR hype by the film producers and by Mexican authorities wishing to promote tourism in the wake of mounting expectations about the end of the Mayan calendar in December 2012, than to a real program of disclosure. What we know for sure is that the documentary... is sponsored by the Mexican Ministry of Tourism’s Mundo Maya (Mayan World) Program, although its financing comes from American sources”.

Raul Julia-Levy. See here for info.
Just who these “American sources” are is still a mystery, though producer Julia-Levy has insisted to The Hollywood Reporter that the documentary’s financial backers and distributors are “major” Hollywood players. He also claims his documentary will feature an underwater Maya city, a millennia-old landing pad once used for spacecraft, and evidence of ancient human contact with extraterrestrials.

Julia-Levy describes the alleged underwater city as “a city that was built under water, and not a sunken city,” and claims it was found at the bottom of a lake in Guatemala. He says footage of the underwater city will feature in the documentary. Additionally, the producer claims his film will reveal “a 3,000-year-old spacecraft landing pad that was allegedly built atop a rock structure capable of holding electromagnetic energy.”

Raul Julia-Levy told Pijama Surf that this image represents a teleportation machine, a time machine or some kind of technological artifact, this according to a report he received from Guatemalan archaeologists.

If all this weren’t intriguing enough, in a new twist, Julia-Levy claimed last week that he was recently contacted by the Vatican. In a telephone conversation with the Pijama Surf website, Julia-Levy said he had received official communication from the Vatican spokesman, Federico Lombardi, who has requested a meeting with him about the documentary.

Julia Levy told Pijama Surf that, although excited by the Vatican’s interest, he is proceeding with caution due to what he views as the Catholic Church’s historical secrecy surrounding the UFO issue. Nevertheless, he believes the Vatican is acting in a spirit of cooperation and hinted that it may even furnish his production with information from its own murky UFO files.

Revelations is set to begin production in February in the jungles of Campeche, Mexico, at the Maya ruins of Calakmul. It is at this site, claims Julia-Levy, that the documentary’s most shocking secret will be revealed. Just what this secret is, he won’t say, but he claims it is nothing less than "the most important archaeological finding in the history of mankind,” adding “It's going to open the eyes of humanity and elevate the consciousness of every human being on the planet. I guarantee it."

An official announcement of the project is due in the coming weeks and a provisional release date has been set for August. Originally, the acclaimed Mexican director Juan Carlos Rulfo (Those who Remain) was onboard to helm, but conflicting schedules with his other film projects recently forced him to pull out. He has yet to be replaced.

Image of a Mayan inscription interpreted as an alien by Guatemalan archaeologists, according to Raul Julia-Levy.

So, is Revelations a major step towards Disclosure, or merely an ambitious attempt at boosting Mexican and Guatemalan tourism in the historic year of 2012?

For now, all we have is the word of Raul Julia-Levy. He insists that his documentary shows a deep respect for Maya culture and that its impact will be global:

“The problem with most of the productions going on now that are related to the Maya theme is that they're doing them in an erroneous and irresponsible manner... This documentary is going to shake the world.”

Sounds like Conspiracy Spirit

by on Jan.16, 2012, under Breaking News

A trending topic on many social media sites today is "strange sounds." Supposedly, people all around the world are hearing and recording weird sounds coming from the sky. Some are suggesting it's the Earth "groaning," others say it's aliens and others think it's just a viral ad campaign for an upcoming movie.

One of the primary Youtube videos about these sounds, oddly enough, is from Manitoba: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxSulCgmJJA

Thankfully, Redditors have dug around and found some suspicious similarities between all the videos (a list of which is linked in here), and it looks like it's a hoax or a viral conspiracy theory: http://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/oixhc/what_the_hell_are_these_noises_being_heard/

One Redditor did some analysis of the videos and posts his comments in the thread, then later in the thread another Redditor posts his check into who's posting the videos.

Conclusion: much ado about nothing. It's not HAARP, or aliens or Gaia. Seems like it's just the conspiracy crowd at it again.

October UFOs, and a challenge for readers of this blog

by on Nov.03, 2011, under Breaking News

So far, about 65 UFO reports have been added to the Canadian UFO Survey database for October 2011. A few more will likely trickle in, but that's still not bad. It's not the most we've ever recorded, but it's high.

As a snapshot, it suggests that my prediction of "high, but not highest" will likely prevail for 2011. Report numbers are at a high level, but not "35% higher" than last year or any other year, for that matter, unlike some sensational updates and tweets and posts throughout the Internet.

A lot of the reports this year are "orange orbs" and similar lights. Many witnesses are insisting the objects they are seeing are spherical in shape, even though the distances involved rule out any true definition of shape. Many witnesses report orbs "right above us"... then note the objects are 1,000 or 2,000 or 5,000 (or even two miles!) up in the sky.

A lot of the cases, especially in southern Ontario, are observations of Chinese lanterns. Many witnesses dispute this, even though it can be shown in some instances that a wedding party was being held only a short distance away and such paper balloons were sent up that same night, down to the minute. I tried sending up a few of these myself this summer, just to see what they looked like and how easy it was to launch them. (It is.)

The cases that intrigue me, however, are reports of multiple objects seen at the same time, flying in formation. These are all points of light, obviously very high and far away, and are often described on UFO websites as "Massive UFO fleets" and things like that. More often, witnesses are using their cell phone cameras to shoot video of them and post the results to Youtube. Rather than assuming they are all video toaster fakes, some do look genuine, and while I don't think Muskoka is being invaded, it does suggest something curious is being observed. The videos almost always contain segments where the witness uses the zoom function to distort a perfectly fine image of a point of light at effective infinity into a "banded orb" that is a great example of internal refraction.

Then there's the cases where a point of light moving across the firmament (most often a satellite) makes an abrupt right-angle turn. The simplest explanation for these is that there are actually two objects, one of which passes into Earth's shadow about the same time as one emerges.

Now, do I think all orb or LITS (lights in the sky) are explainable as easily? No, because I know there are a number of factors at work, and many other possibilities. However, in painstakingly sifting through witnesses' narratives of their sightings, plus talking and corresponding with them, plus my many years' experience at investigating and interpreting UFO sighting reports, I've found that my intuition for assessing cases is a good way to filter simple IFOs from raw UFO reports.

The cases that are left, then, are what Geoff and I (and others) call high-quality UFO reports. There are some of these every year. Out of the 65 or so filed for October, six cases so far are labeled as "Unknown." That's not bad for a first pass; when the 2011 survey is finally compiled, these six will be re-evaluated to see if they fall into the "high-quality" category, with decent information, detailed descriptions and some level of actual investigation.

Here's an example of a recent UFO report, from Brian Vike's site (he's a very dedicated guy, and is cooperating with our survey):

http://canadaufo.blogspot.com/2011/11/large-red-orange-ball-of-light-seen.html

What do you think this may have been? I have my suspicions, but what about you, the average blog reader? I'm interested in hearing your ideas.

Pilot Videos Lights At Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina- 10/12/2011

by on Oct.30, 2011, under Breaking News

*
On October 12, 2011, a pilot with 37 years experience, videoed unknown lights over the ocean from a North Carolina beach.
Here is that slightly edited report, which was originally submitted to MUFON.

            *

MUFON Case # 32941
Date:    2011-10-12
Time:   20:00
Status:    Assigned
City:    Ocean Isle Beach
State:    North Carolina
Shape:    Star-like
Duration: 00:20:00
Distance: Over one mile
Summary: Multiple Orange Lights at Ocean Isle Beach, NC

Report:
I am a 55 year old business owner from Raleigh, NC and have been an FAA licensed pilot for 37 years. I have an interest in astronomy and am always watching the skies. On Wed. night, Oct. 12 around 8 PM , I was at a beachfront house in Ocean Isle Beach, NC facing East observing the full moon and lightning flashes far out to sea. I began a 20 minute Video recording with my Sony SR11 Hi Definition camcorder to record the distant lightning which according to a weather website was over a hundred miles out to sea. During my recording, I captured over a dozen total orange glowing stationary lights at different points in the video. These lights were similar to lights I observed on three separate nights last June while on a one week vacation at the same beach. Myrtle Beach, SC is just south of Ocean Isle and I have read multiple reports of orange lights recently from that more populated tourist area.

Last June, the orange lights I observed would suddenly appear and stay on for more than 30 seconds. I first thought they were distant aircraft landing lights even though they were not the usual white color. And I quickly ruled out landing lights when I watched them rotate around each other. Also, one of the lights in June silently cruised horizontally at over 100 miles per hour before disappearing. During last week's sighting, they would light up for only a few seconds before fading out. I estimate the objects that appear in my video were between 1 and 2 miles away at between 500 and 1,000 feet altitude. And the objects were totally silent as they were in June.

I have uploaded to Youtube a 22 second hi-definition video clip showing at least 4 of the glowing orbs. The Youtube link is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZXPhX9MfAw. My camera was aimed East looking down the beach. Among the recognizable items are a neighbor's white stairs to the beach, a lighted buoy which is about a mile away and a distant flashing beacon on the horizon . Old Baldy lighthouse on Bald Head Island 25 miles away is visible flashing to the right. In the sky the full moon appears as a somewhat fuzzy large orb and the planet Jupiter is constantly visible to the lower left of the moon.

The four orange lights appear as white on the video due to my camera's low light limitations.

A San Antonio resident made the news, when he claimed that on Wednesday, September 14, 2011, he spotted an Unidentified Flying Object and captured it on video.

“I was pointing that way and I saw that object traveling that way, going east,” said Vallejo. “First of all no navigational lights that’s what got my attention at first. Then I started zooming in and I started seeing the different configuration of the lights.”

As of today, his Youtube video has had over 45, 000 views.

Sep-14-2011 a Huge UFO craft was filmed over San Antonio,Tx..As I was facing west I notice this Huge glowing object traveling east.I could clearly see this object was no aircraft .No FAA navigational light's were visible. So i quickly crabbed my camcorder for a closer observation..As i began filming this huge unknown object multiply lights could be seen..This UFO appears to be a solid craft. On the video you can see this object to be emiting some kind of glowing energy. While i was filming unknown, the lights configuration began to change. When zooming in multiply lights were diff were shape... I did not see any FAA lights/hear any noise coming from this unknown object....In my opinion Clearly an UNIDENTIFED FLYING OBJECT..This was an awesome sighting due to as it appears to be One solid object..And the size of this object seemed to be enormous..This huge glowing object was clearly no aircraft or satellite.

Science News- Faster Than Light; UARS Satellite Update; Move Over, "Total Recall"

by on Sep.23, 2011, under Breaking News

Beam me up, Scotty!

"Faster than light" particles may be physics revolution

(Reuters) - Scientists around the world said on Friday the discovery of sub-atomic particles apparently traveling faster than light could force a major rethink of theories on the makeup of the cosmos, but the findings would first have to be independently confirmed.

"Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and this is an extraordinary claim," eminent cosmologist and astrophysicist Martin Rees told Reuters.

The CERN research institute near Geneva said measurements over three years had shown neutrinos pumped to a receiver in Gran Sasso, Italy, had arrived 60 nanoseconds sooner than light would have done -- a tiny difference that could nonetheless undermine Albert Einstein's 1905 special theory of relativity.

"It is premature to comment on this," Professor Stephen Hawking, the world's most well-known physicist, told Reuters. "Further experiments and clarifications are needed."

Professor Jenny Thomas, who works on neutrinos at CERN's friendly rival Fermilab near Chicago in the United States, commented: "The impact of this measurement, were it to be correct, would be huge."
Professor Geoffrey Hall of London's Imperial College, who has worked with CERN, said the

implications of the results were profound, possibly challenging "a fundamental part of our science culture."
CERN's own research director Sergio Bertolucci said if the findings were confirmed -- and at least two separate laboratories are likely to start work on this in the near future -- "it might change our view of physics."

The high level of caution is normal in science where anything that could be a breakthrough discovery, especially overturning well-established thinking, is in principle always checked and rechecked by other researchers.

The discovery would force a rethink of fundamental theories of physics and of the nature of the universe. It would herald a revolution in physics comparable to that caused by Einstein's publication of his Special Theory of Relativity.

In a comment issued by CERN, the world's leading laboratory for particle research on the edge of Geneva, Bertolucci underscored this principle.

"When an experiment finds an apparently unbelievable result and can find no artefact of the measurement to account for it, it is normal to invite broader scrutiny....it is good scientific practice," he said.

The experiment, whose measurements were posted on the scientific website arxiv.org/abs/1109.4897 overnight, found the long enigmatic neutrinos consistently traveling at an average of 60 nanoseconds faster than light.

GHOST PARTICLES

The team, working in an experiment dubbed OPERA, pumped neutrinos -- often called ghost particles because they pass through matter, and human bodies, unnoticed -- from CERN 730 kms (500 miles) to Gran Sasso south of Rome.

Over three years, and from 15,000 neutrino "events," a huge detector at the Italian center deep under mountain rock recorded what OPERA spokesman Antonio Ereditato described as the "startling" findings.
He said his team had high confidence they had measured correctly and excluded any possibility of some outside influence, or artefact, affecting the outcome. "My dream is now that other colleagues find we are right," he added.

In Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity, which underpins the current view of how the universe works, nothing can travel faster than light -- 300,000 kms, or 186,000 miles, per second -- because its mass would become impossibly infinite.

Einstein's theory has been tested thousands of times over the past 106 years and only recently have there been just slight hints that the behavior of some elementary particles of matter might not fit into it.

These hints were detected last year in Fermilab's MINOS experiment with neutrinos, but -- unlike those of OPERA -- were found to be within a normal margin of error.

Fermilab's Thomas, who is likely to be involved in MINOS experiments to check the CERN-Gran Sasso measurements, said if they were correct "it would overturn everything we thought we understood about relativity and the speed of light."

Ereditato, a physicist who also works at the Einstein Institute in the University of Berne, said the potential impact on science "is too large to draw any immediate conclusions or attempt physics interpretations."

SURPRISING WITH MYSTERIES

Also declining to claim a genuine scientific discovery before other researchers had confirmed them, he said the neutrino, whose existence was first confirmed in 1934, "is still surprising us with its mysteries."

Scientific bloggers on the Internet said the particle might be slipping into and out of dimensions, other than the known four of length, breadth, depth and time, as predicted by the controversial "string theory" of how the cosmos works.

The OPERA team is due to formally present its findings to the scientific community later on Friday at CERN, home to the Large Hadron Collider, or LHC, which is smashing particles together in research on how the universe began.

UARS satellite return expected later

(BBC News)- US officials now say the fall to Earth of Nasa's six-tonne UARS satellite could occur early on Saturday (GMT).

Estimates of where debris might fall will be narrowed hours before impact.

And a UK team studying the trajectory says the most likely time for re-entry could be after 23:00 GMT Friday, and as late as 03:00 GMT on Saturday.

Most of the decommissioned and now unpowered spacecraft should simply burn up, but modelling work suggests perhaps 500kg could survive to the surface.

UARS is the largest American space agency satellite to return uncontrolled into the atmosphere in about 30 years.

As of 15:30 GMT on Friday, the satellite was orbiting at an altitude between 160km and 170km (100 miles by 105 miles).

If the estimates for its re-entry are correct, it means the spacecraft will not come in over North America.

"The spacecraft orbits the Earth in 90 minutes, so even if we're off by a few minutes in the prediction - that's thousands of kilometres down range," said Mark Matney, an orbital debris scientist from Nasa's Johnson Space Center.

"We'll be able to know generally a few hours before, but we'll only get a final report after it re-enters. Even then, we won't know where the pieces fall because they'll be scattered over a 500-mile path," he told BBC News.

The Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) will start to tumble rapidly when it engages the top of the atmosphere, about 80km up.

Mechanical forces will rip off less robust structures such as the solar array and antennas.

The heating that the satellite then experiences as it plunges deeper into the atmosphere will start to deform and melt low-temperature materials and then vaporise them.

Components expected to survive are made from high-temperature metals such as stainless steel, titanium and beryllium.

Some 26 items have been suggested as impactors. The largest is one of UARS' instrument tables and weighs over 150kg.
With more than 70% of the Earth's surface covered by water, the chances are that any debris will fall into the ocean.

But if the re-entry does occur over populated areas of land, it should make for a spectacular streak across the sky, even in daylight.

The British Kettering Group of amateur satellite observers has been running predictions based on orbital data released by US authorities.

The group's latest estimates put a re-entry somewhere between 23:00 GMT and 15:00 GMT (00:00-16:00 BST).

"Statistically speaking, the most likely epitaph for the satellite is UARS R.I.P. (Remains In Pacific)," said group member Dr Stuart Eves.

"But there is still a chance that observers in the UK with clear skies could be treated to a 'fireball' display moving generally from north-west to south-east across the sky."

The UARS satellite was deployed in 1991 from the space shuttle Discovery on a mission to study the Earth's upper atmosphere.

It contributed important new understanding on subjects such as the chemistry of the protective ozone layer and the cooling effect volcanoes can exert on the global climate.

Liability question

Nasa has warned members of the public not to touch any pieces of the spacecraft that may survive the re-entry, urging them to contact local law enforcement authorities.

"I've seen some things that have re-entered and they tend to have sharp edges, so there's a little concern that they might hurt themselves if they try to pick them up," said Dr Matney.

Experts have calculated the probability of anyone anywhere on Earth being injured by a falling UARS component as 1 in 3,200.

Under the terms of the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, the US government retains ownership of the debris and could, if it so wished, seek to take possession of any items found on the ground.

With those ownership rights also comes absolute liability if a piece of UARS were to damage property or injure someone.

"There is something called international responsibility; they're internationally liable," explained Joanne Wheeler of law firm CMS Cameron McKenna, and an expert representative for the UK on the UN Subcommittee for the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.

"The Americans have to retain jurisdiction and control, and that pretty much can be interpreted as ownership. So they own it up there, they own it if it comes down to Earth and they're liable if it crashes into something."
Tracking stations will typically witness the uncontrolled return of at least one piece of space debris every day; and on average, one intact defunct spacecraft or old rocket body will come back into the atmosphere every week.

Something the size of UARS is seen perhaps once a year. Much larger objects such as space station cargo ships return from orbit several times a year, but they are equipped with thrusters capable of guiding their dive into a remote part of the Southern Ocean.

  • UARS orbits the Earth between 57 degrees North and South
  • Nasa calculates some 26 components may survive the fall to Earth
  • The largest is a moveable instrument platform weighing almost 160kg
  • In total, about half a tonne may make it all the way to the surface
  • The risk of any one of 7bn people being hit is 1 in 3,200, Nasa says

"Total Recall" not so far fetched?

Scientists Can (Almost) Read Your Mind, Turn Thoughts into Movies

(Techland.Time.com)- Mind, prepare to be blown—and scanned, by a device that can almost read thoughts, or at least digitize them into almost-identifiable images. No, it's not some artsy video project, it's for real: a system developed by University of California Berkeley scientists to capture visual activity in our brains and reassemble it as recognizable video data.

It sounds like science fiction, but it's not, and according to the scientists, it represents a "critical" step toward reconstructing everything from what we're thinking while awake to what's happening as we dream.

That's a video of the process up top. A test subject is undergoing an MRI while watching random video clips from Hollywood movies. On the left side, you see clips from what the subject viewed. On the right, you see the fMRI results of "quantitative modeling" using "a new motion-energy encoding model," essentially a matchup of brain activity with the viewed images. As you can see, at worst, it's capable of reconstructing what was viewed in terms of the video image's elemental geometry, e.g. broad shapes, lights and darks, etc. And at best, you can make out identifiable human forms and even vague facial features. (Interestingly, the human-related images seem the least abstruse, which, perhaps—wild speculation on my part here—says something about species-related bias in our recognition patterns.)

Here's the research team's "intuitive" description of the process:

As you move through the world or you watch a movie, a dynamic, ever-changing pattern of activity is evoked in the brain. The goal of movie reconstruction is to use the evoked activity to recreate the movie you observed. To do this, we create encoding models that describe how movies are transformed into brain activity, and then we use those models to decode brain activity and reconstruct the stimulus.

"This is a major leap toward reconstructing internal imagery," said U.C. Berkeley neuroscientist Jack Gallant, a coauthor of the study published yesterday in the journal Current Biology (via U.C. Berkeley News Center). "We are opening a window into the movies in our minds."

How'd they do it? Volunteers remained still within the MRI scanner for several hours and watched two sets of Hollywood movie trailers. Blood flow through the visual cortex was measured and their brains divided into tiny three-dimensional cubes (no, not literally—on the computer!) called volumetric pixels...or as I first heard them described in gaming parlance decades ago, "voxels" (remember the Comanche attack helicopter series?).

Researchers created a computer model that describes how visual information translates as brain activity, then applied it to each "brain voxel." As volunteers watched the first set of movie clips, their brain activity was processed by the computer to "learn" to associate visual patterns in the clips with corresponding brain activity.

Brain activity from viewing the second set of clips was then used to test the computer's reconstruction algorithm—the computer used 18 million seconds (5,000 hours) of random YouTube videos that didn't include the movies viewed by the test subjects to build a kind of "reference library," correlating the brain imagery with video clip imagery.

In the final step, the computer selected the 100 clips that were most like the ones the subjects had watched and combined them to form the movie you see above (the right-side feed)—an indirect way of going about it, to be sure, but astonishing for what it accomplishes.

We're probably a ways from science fiction movies like Strange Days, where "Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices" record events direct from a wearer's cerebral cortex and can translate them to others as if they were experiencing the same events firsthand—but with results like these, where computers can "learn" to accurately relate what was seen with how the brain recorded it, we're definitely getting closer.

[Note: Oh, now that is just scary! -SW]

Scorpion-shaped UFO seen in the skies over Los Cristianos, Spain [photos]

Examiner.com- In one of the most unusual recent UFO sightings, a scorpion-shaped object was spotted in the skies above Los Cristianos, Spain on Saturday, August 21, 2011. Jamie O'Rourke saw the unidentified flying object near his home around 8:00am and managed to snap several photos before the object disappeared.

An Internet search for scorpion-shaped kites did not reveal anything like the bizarre object seen in the photos on the left side of this page. A similar search for scorpion-shaped UFOs also revealed nothing. The strange unidentified flying object photographed in Los Cristianos seems to defy logic or explanation at this time.

You can see from the photos that this UFO was elongated in shape and dark in color. It had two protruding appendages on one end that resembled the pincers or claws of a scorpion. On the opposite end, the UFO had a long tail that looked like the tail or stinger of a scorpion.

UFO Global Reporting Center has the scoop on this UFO sighting on their blog. They reported: "One of our [UFO Global Reporting Center's] subscribers Jamie O'Rourke (FaceBook) sent us these images. Jamie took these images near his house around 20th Street, about 8:00am on August 21, 2011."

Shanghai Daily initially reported on August 18th that a UFO shut down operations at Jiangbei International Airport in Chongqing. To ensure safety, planes were “dramatically diverted away from the airport”, their report said. Their report also stated that airport workers thought the object in question was a sky lantern or a large balloon.

eChinacities.com reported on August 19th that the initial reports of the UFO in Chongqing originated from the microblogging site Sina Weibo. The blog reports were accompanied by a photo of an object in the sky, which does not resemble a sky lantern or large balloon in any way.

According to their website, eChinacities.com “is privately funded and is in no way affiliated with government agencies in or outside of China”.

The photos that originated from Sina Weibo were later examined in the United States by Benjamin Radford, deputy editor of the Skeptical Inquirer. It was Radford’s conclusion that the object indicated in the photo was “just an unusual cloud”.

No report has yet been offered to explain the initial opinion formulated by airport workers, and relayed via Shanghai Daily, that the object was either a sky lantern or large balloon. On a related note, it has not been addressed why these same airport workers were not informed of any airspace control exercises that required the diversion of several flights.

UFO Spotted Over Chinese Airport

Foxnews.com- CHONGQING, China – Planes were dramatically diverted away from a major Chinese airport after reports of a UFO circling a runway, the Shanghai Daily reported Thursday.

The mysterious object was spotted Wednesday afternoon floating high above Jiangbei International Airport in the city of Chongqing, an important aviation hub for southwestern China.

Worried officials diverted several flights to other airports before it disappeared about 50 minutes later and air traffic was allowed to return to normal.

The Chongqing government has not offered any explanation for the UFO, Shanghai Daily said. However, skeptical airport workers believe it was a sky lantern or a large balloon, the newspaper said.

Wednesday's scare mirrors an incident in July last year when Xiaoshan airport in the eastern city of Hangzhou was closed after baffled air traffic controllers spotted a UFO on their radar screens.

The object vanished but footage of a strange glowing orb streaking across the night sky was posted on YouTube, sparking global interest in the supposed close encounter.

UFO sparks search on shores of Loch Ness

STV.tv- Emergency services were called out to investigate reports of a 'round, balloon-like' object falling from the sky near the village of Dores.

A mysterious flying object above Loch Ness sparked a large-scale search by emergency services.

Police, coastguard officers, a lifeboat crew and an RAF search and rescue helicopter scoured the around Dores, on the southern shore of the loch, following reports of an object falling from the sky at about 8pm on Saturday.

Northern Constabulary said the object was described as being "round, balloon-like in shape and blue in colour".

The search was carried out amid fears that a parachutist or hang-glider could have crash-landed in the remote area, but after three hours no trace of an aircraft or parachute could be found and the search was stood down.

One local resident, Denise Rooney, told STV's Facebook page she had noticed an object in the sky while having a barbecue in the hills above Dores.

She said: "I pointed out a white globe that I thought was a star initially but it moved across the sky. It was very far away. Could have been anything and it was on a steady path.

"I just remembered thinking I could see it but not hear it and it was an unusual flight path from that direction."

Rescue workers said the alarm was raised in good faith and commended members of the public who called out the emergency services.

Loch Ness RNLI crew member Martin Douglas said: "A member of the public reported seeing a hang glider or microlight descending into the loch.

"The RNLI lifeboat crew spoke to people on the shoreline who stated that they had seen a balloon-like object just above the tree line near Dores."

His colleague Vivian Bailey added: "Speed of arrival on scene was essential and we were able to link our search efforts with those of the Coastguard and RAF, something we practice regularly.

"We believe the reports were based on sightings causing genuine concern and we commend the actions of the members of the public that contacted the emergency services."

A police spokeswoman said: "Northern Constabulary and HM Coastguard responded to a report of an object falling from the sky on the south side of Loch Ness approximately two to five kilometres south-west of the village of Dores.

"The object was described as being round, balloon-like in shape and blue in colour.

"An extensive search was carried out by police, coastguard, Loch Ness lifeboat and RAF search and rescue helicopter 137, with nothing untoward being found."
